History and Usage of Tin

Tin is a chemical element located in the period table. The symbol for Tin is Sn which is derived from Tin’s Latin name, stannum. The atomic number for Tin is 50. Tin is a soft, malleable metal that resists corrosion well and can be found in a number of alloys.

History:

Tin is one of the earliest known metals, and has been used in the past as a component of bronze. As early as 3,500 BC, Tin was used in bronze implements because if its hardening effect on copper. The mining of Tin is believed to have begun around Classical times, in Cornwall and Devon. With the civilizations of the Mediterranean, a thriving Tin trade was allowed to develop. After 4000 years of Tin mining in Cornwall, the last Cornish Tin Mine was closed in 1998. Although the American Heritage Dictionary speculates that the word Tin was borrowed from a pre-Indo European language, no one is exactly sure where the word Tin originated.

The word Tin is often used improperly in modern times, as people often use it as a generic phrase for any sort of metal that is silver in color and available in thin sheets. Objects like tin foil and tin cans are actually made out of steel or aluminum, though there is a thin layer of tin in cans in an attempt to prevent rusting.

Usage:

Because Tin bonds easily, it has been used to coat lead, zinc and steel in order to prevent corrosion. Containers fashioned from steel plated with Tin are used widely for preserving food, which forms a large part of the metallic tin market. This is why cans are often called ‘Tin cans’, even when created from steel. There is always at least a small amount of tin incorporated into the metal.

Other important tin alloys include bronze, Babbitt metal, die casting alloy, phosphor bronze, pewter, soft solder, bell metal and White metal. Many of the metal pipes found in a pipe organ are created with a tin and lead alloy. Spotted metal, used in the pipes, is created when a 50%/50% alloy cools, and a mottled or spotted effect is created when the lead cools slightly faster than the Tin. The amount of tin present in organ pipes can define the pipe tone, as Tin is one of the most tonally resonant of all metal types.

Glass for windows is made using what is often called the Pilkington process, and entails floating molten hot glass atop molten hot tin, creating what is known as float glass, in order to create a perfectly flat surface. Tin is also commonly used in solders, especially in joining pipes, electric circuits, bearing alloys, glass making, and a wide variety of other applications.

Paphos Cyprus – A Wonderful Holiday Destination

Paphos, in the Southwest corner of Cyprus, is one of the most popular tourist destinations. Historical and archaeological treasure are everywhere, from the lovely floor mosaics to the network of catacombs used by the early Christians. There are mysterious caves and vaults to explore and beautiful soft sand beaches lapped by a turquoise sea. The District of Paphos has been named as a world heritage site by UNESCO and is the perfect place for a holiday or retirement home.

Paphos itself consists of two districts, the resort area called Kato Phaphos and the town itself called Pano Paphos. The resort area has lovely sand beaches, including the famous Coral Bay, and the popular promenade bordering the sea where tourists and locals stroll on warm summer evenings. It is also famous for it’s old harbour and medieval fort but there you can also shop to your heart’s content in modern boutiques and malls in Pano Paphos. There is a wide range of cultural entertainment available including regular concerts and operas and there are museums and art galleries to visit.

Antiquities from around Paphos are housed in the District Archaeological Museum and you can see lovely Roman floor mosaics, well preserved after many centuries, in the remains of villas in the area. The remains of the Roman Agora (the market place) are worth a visit as in the ancient building that was dedicated to Asclepius, god of medicine from whom we get the Rod of Asclepius still used today as a symbol of medicine.  To the North west of Phaphos is the Tomb of the Kings dating back to the fourth century. The underground tombs are carved from solid rock and are still being excavated today. They were the burial grounds of the aristocracy of Paphos around the third century C.E. and are named for their magnificence as they were never actually kings buried there. Many were made in the form of residences of the time complete with Doric columns and walls decorated with frescoes.

We could not describe Paphos without referring to the Greek goddess Aphrodite whose birthplace was in the ocean close by. Myth recounts how she was born from the ocean foam and was carried to land at Petra tou Romiou on a scallop shell wafted by the breeze of the Zephyr’s. Paphos remained the center of the worship of Aphrodite where she was worshiped in earlier incarnations as Ashtaroth and Ishtar.

Moving out from the center of Paphos district into the green hills of the suburbs you will find stunning views of the coast and the Troodos mountains. Further away are quiet villages still pursuing a life that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. Traditional crafts are still done here including lace making, weaving, silver smithing and embroidery.

Gently rising from Phaphos the surrounding hills offer superb views of the coast and are the location of suburban areas such as Yeroskipou, Konia, Chorio, Peyia, and Tala. A short distance away you will encounter quiet villages still pursuing a rural life that has been unchanged for centuries.

Paphos has a mild climate, with low humidity and is a popular place to visit throughout the year. In the heat of the summer the many sandy beaches are a major attraction but in the cooler winter months cycling and walking in the surrounding hills or the Troodos mountains is an attractive activity. Paphos has so much to offer once visited you will return year after year and never run out of new things to do or interesting places to visit.

What does it take to become a global leader? It is a question that more organizations should be asking. Yet, the right kind of opportunity be the thing that can transform the average person into a great global leader. In fact, having access and opportunities are critical. Loaded with access to the Internet, a blog, and a website, any savvy businessman can take a stab at being a global leader. Many managers attempt to operate globally by mere trial and error. Although an education is not a silver bullet for developing global leaders, it may be the key that unlocks the door to globalization. First, global leaders are distinctive. Noted authors Black, Morrison, and Gregersen maintain that every global leader has a set of global characteristics regardless of his or her country or industry. They also suggest that exemplar global leaders are highly competent and possess a keen interest in global business. The four key areas include inquisitiveness, perspective, character, and business savvy. In fact, business savvy becomes the word of the day because one must be able think globally and adjust activities on the local level as well as satisfy customers at all levels.

Furthermore, an academic institution can provide this opportunity for global admission. Organizations that control the selection and development of global leaders has influence. Herman, author of Leadership for the 21st Century, argues that new global leaders need new ways to work with change. Therefore, today’s universities can further assist students who lack global experience by offering global internships and oversea assignments. Through attending these universities, students can avail themselves with more global opportunities. However, noted authors McCall and Hollenbeck suggest that experience is the primary vehicle for developing global leaders. Clearly, the person who acquires this experience has a competitive advantage. Finally, an education affords individual economic and social mobility in our society; we are not locked into a caste system based on our heritage. Growing up in a poor community, an education meant more access. Through this network of educational access, every person has a chance to one day become a global leader.
